When I talk to business owners and managers about AI, one reply comes up again and again: "We will look at it next year, once things settle down."
I understand why. AI changes every month, there are too many tools, and everyone is already busy. Waiting feels like the safe option.
But waiting is also a decision, and it has a cost. That cost is usually hidden, because it shows up as small delays and quiet risks rather than one obvious problem. Here are the five I see most often.
1. The same work keeps taking the same time
A proposal that takes half a day to draft. A weekly report that eats every Monday morning. Meeting notes that nobody writes up. In a team that has learned to use AI well, much of this is first-drafted in minutes, and people spend their time checking and improving instead.
If your competitor's team works this way and yours does not, the gap is not dramatic on any single day. It adds up over a year.
2. Your staff are already using AI, without guidance
In most workplaces, someone is already pasting work into a free AI tool. Sometimes it is a customer email. Sometimes it is a contract, a salary sheet or confidential pricing.
Not training your team does not stop them using AI. It only means they are using it without rules, without good habits and without anyone checking what goes in or what comes out. That is a bigger risk than learning to use it properly.
3. The skills gap gets wider, not smaller
AI tools are not going to slow down while your team catches up. Each month they can do more, and each month a team that started early builds more confidence and better habits.
Starting later does not mean starting from the same place. It means starting further behind, with more to learn at once.
4. Money goes to tools nobody uses
Without basic skills, teams often buy subscriptions after a good demo, try them for a few weeks and drift back to the old way of working. The tool gets blamed, but the real problem is that nobody learned how to fit it into daily work. I wrote about this in Where SMEs Should Start With AI.
5. Good people notice
Capable staff want to keep their skills current. When they see peers in other companies learning to work with AI and they are not given the same chance, some of them will look elsewhere. Training is one of the simplest ways to show people they have a future in your organisation.
Where we come in
This is why A Training Academy exists. We teach teams to use AI in their real work. The focus is on practical skills, not theory or hype.
Our training is hands-on and built around the work your people already do. Participants leave with something they can use the next day, such as an AI assistant they built themselves, a workflow they redesigned or a plan for their department. We run programmes in English, Malay or Mandarin, on-site or online, for teams in Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and across the region.
We currently offer 13 programmes across four areas:
- AI Productivity: hands-on skills for using AI in daily work, including programmes for managers, document-heavy roles and HR teams
- Leadership & Change: for leaders who need to set direction for AI, make better decisions and bring their teams through change
- Operations: designing AI-enabled workflows, and getting better results from suppliers
- Compliance: data protection, cybersecurity, anti-money laundering and employment law, built around Malaysian legal requirements
Because AI moves quickly, so does our line-up. We add new programmes and update existing ones as the tools and the ways of working change. That way, what participants learn reflects how AI is being used now, not how it was used a year ago.
Not sure where to start? Start with the role

| A manager or decision-maker new to AI | Applied AI for Business (1 day) |
| Working with large volumes of documents | Gemini Notebook for Productivity & Research (half day) |
| In HR | AI for HR Professionals (1 day) |
| Running operations or a process | AI Workflow Design & Process Digitisation (2 days) |

Three things to do this month
You do not need a big plan to stop the cost of waiting. Start with these:
- Ask your team where they already use AI. You will learn more from the answers than from any vendor demo, and you may find risks you did not know about.
- Pick one group to start with. Leaders, one department or one process. Small and focused beats company-wide and vague.
- Book the training before the next busy period. In-house programmes need about 3 to 4 weeks' notice, so the best time to start planning is now, not next quarter.
